The outermost layer of tooth i.e enamel is considered to be the hardest and durable substance in the human body and bears maximum forces hence providing protection.It still can succumb to cracks .Understanding the reason behind the crack and proper diagnosis is important for maintaining dental health .
Repeatedly consuming hard foods, any trauma such as fall etc. may inflict trauma to tooth ,jaws resulting in cracks in tooth .Misalignment ,excessive clenching and excess force on tooth also contribute to cracks. Previously done Root canal, improper filling and severely decayed teeth are also contributing factors.
Symptoms:
Any history of fall,accident or trauma to tooth ,Pain on chewing or biting ,sensitivity to cold and hot foods,Visible crack or microscopic crack which can be diagnosed by the dentist.
How is cracked teeth diagnosed by Dentist:
A X ray image ,visual examination, pain on tapping the teeth, bite tests and also the dentist will further assess pain levels and stability of the tooth .
Prevention:
To avoid trauma one can use protective gear during sports and other activities, Orthodontic treatment in case the teeth are misaligned ,using occlusal guard for clenching issues, Avoiding chewing on hard foods are few preventive measures to avoid cracked teeth .
Once the dentist evaluates the teeth, they might give temporary stabilization incase of loose tooth, restoration in case of defective filling and crowns ,Root canal therapy and bonded fillings. The treatment modality depends on the cause of tooth crack.
Initial Care:
Incase of bleeding, rinse mouth using salt water and apply moist gauze ,one can also take over the counter pain relief medication and cover the crack till dental appointment is scheduled.Avoiding hard foods and increase in consumption of soft foods and avoiding extreme hot and cold foods.
Cracked tooth is a visible crack or fracture on a tooth ,it might be visible to naked eyes or might not be ,they can be confirmed through X Ray or other imaging techniques etc .
