An inflammatory condition of gums where there is redness,irritation and swelling on or around the gums surrounding the tooth.If not treated it might further advance damaging the tooth supporting structures and lead to periodontitis or tooth loss .Gingivitis is commonly caused due to poor oral hygiene and increased plaque and calculus. It may also be aggravated by certain systemic/medical conditions.
Primarily it is caused by plaque or the sticky material on the tooth surface which is not duly removed, it increases with ingestion of sticky and sugary foods providing ideal environment for bacterial growth. If plaque is not removed it may harden further to form calculus and tartar which is more tough to remove and irritates the gum line.
