Temporomandibular or the Jaw joint is vital structure which helps in smooth functioning of jaw by maintaining proper movements like chewing,yawning,speaking.Many Muscles are involved in proper functioning of the joint and its movement, any dysfunction may result in wide range of symptoms and affect day to day activities of an individual.
Anatomy & Location
This joint is located at the junction of the upper /temporal bone and mandible of the lower jawbone on each side of head.Surrounded by many muscles,cartilages and cushioning disc and capsule containing fluid which helps in downward,backwards,side word,forward movement of jaws.
Causes of TMJ Disorders:
Many factors contribute to TMJ Disorders such as trauma due to any type of injuries ,fractures or tear in capsule; Ageing or degenerative disorders like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis ,Inflammation of joint due to continuous clenching or bruxism ,Dental misalignments, Autoimmune disease and cancers may also cause TMJ Disorders.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorders:
Severe jaw pain and associated headache near skull temples and jaw muscle pain,Any clicking or popping out sound on opening and closing of mouth ,Lock Condition in which it is very painful to close back mouth .Pain in ear,etc .

Detailed dental and medical review is taken including any lifestyle habits or changes ,Jaw motion is checked by asking to open and close mouth ,teeth alignment and any clenching signs are examined ,X-ray or CT Scan may be suggested by the dentist,
